Peter Thompson - Managing DirectorReflecting on the 2009 year, with the unprecedented turmoil in the International Banking Sector, I thought it might be useful to update our customers with PBTI news and to give an industry perspective as we see it.
The last twelve months have witnessed major changes in our global industry; I will summarise a few:

The US$ climbed in value against the Euro and £sterling during mid 2009 then fell back later in the year. With many OEMs pricing internationally in US$, this meant price rises of up to 30% for many OEM products and created great opportunities for switch-selling to reconditioned (remanufactured) products as offered by PBTI through our Xinia brand. The increased proportion of sales of remanufactured cartridges has caused some restrictions in availability of used OEM cartridges, which are the feedstock for our industry. It will be necessary for used cartridge brokers to be more creative in recovering a higher proportion of discarded OEM empties.

Prices for goods shipped to the UK out of China rose due to the strengthening of the Chinese Yuan and the US$ in which many Chinese goods are priced. Wage increases in China, restrictions on waste (used cartridges) entering China and higher shipping costs have also increased costs of Chinese remanufactured goods and are likely to restrict the volume of reconditioned cartridges available from China.

The £ Sterling has devalued against the Euro by approximately 15% over the last year or so. This has made eurozone goods entering the UK more expensive, causing problems for many UK distributors but has created opportunities for PBTI to export higher volumes of cartridges into Continental Europe.

In the USA, the market for reconditioned cartridges has shrunk slightly due to reduced demand as there have been no European-style OEM price increases to drive switch-selling.

Colour laser printers continue to increase in market share in Europe. Many reconditioning companies struggle with the more complex technology and although up to 30% of mono cartridges are recycled; we believe only 10 – 15% of colour laser cartridges are typically recycled at this time, according to industry sources.

Xinia News

Our loyal customers throughout the EC have been rewarded with stable pricing in spite of the price increases we have faced in raw materials from Continental Europe and the Far East. We have managed to press component prices down, negotiate longer-term deals and also have offset raw material price increases against export cartridge sales we make to many Continental European countries, in order to achieve this.
We have worked very hard to give our UK customers a chance to increase their sales and improve profitability providing stable pricing linked with very high cartridge quality and excellent market support. Recent Export Sales recruit Peter Timan is fluent in French, German, Dutch and English.

Colour

New Technology developed in PBTI laboratories has put us – and our customers – at the forefront of the ‘Alternative Cartridge Supplies’ market for toner based cartridges and although, as stated above, the global reconditioning industry struggles to recycle more than 10% or 15% of OEM toner based cartridges, PBTI production is now a massive 70% colour!

For our customers, having alternative colour cartridges at very competitive prices is a ‘profit margin inflator’ and the good news is we plan to launch a number of exciting new colour products over the coming months in addition to new mono products.

Production

Our production output increased by more than 50% during 2009 and we plan to continue increasing production output throughout 2010. Our inventory levels of finished goods have been raised and we presently ship over 90% of UK orders same-day for overnight delivery.

The Alternative Supplies Market we are in is dynamic, growing and helping to sustain the world’s non-renewable resources. PBTI is proud that all our factory power comes from renewable sources. There is a powerful message to users of Xinia products:
  • Buy British – we produce only in the UK
  • Save Money and reduce inventory by buying from a UK producer
  • Cast a greener shadow over the commercial landscape by using low carbon footprint Xinia cartridges
I should like to thank all our customers for your loyalty – we value the over 95% repeat business you give us.
If you are not at present a PBTI customer, I invite you to talk to us about developing your consumables business in partnership with us, in the sure knowledge that over 25years of experience and innovation, providing toner based solutions to globally based customers, will strengthen your consumables sales and improve your profitability. Our International Customer Service is “Class-Leading” – why not call us on 0044 (0)1749 685675 for more information. Personnel can talk to you in English, German, French and Dutch languages.

Sincerely,

Peter Thompson.

In these unusual times, I thought it might be useful to update our customers with PBTI news and to give an industry perspective as we see it.The last six months have witnessed major changes in our global industry; I will summarise a few:
Peter Thompson - Managing Director
  • The US$ has climbed in value since August ’08 by 30% against the UK£ Sterling. With many OEMs pricing internationally in US$ or Japanese ¥Yen, this has meant price rises of 30% for many OEM products. This offers great opportunities for switch-selling to reconditioned (remanufactured) products as offered by PBTI through our Xinia brand.

  • Prices for goods shipped to the UK out of China have risen, in some cases by more than 30%, due to the strengthening of the Chinese Yuan and the US$ in which many Chinese goods are priced. Wage increases in China, restrictions on waste (used cartridges) entering China and higher shipping costs have also greatly increased prices and are likely to restrict the volume of reconditioned cartridges available from China.

  • The £ Sterling has devalued against the Euro by approximately 20% in recent months. This has made eurozone goods entering the UK 20% more expensive, causing problems for many UK distributors.

  • In the USA, the market for reconditioned cartridges has shrunk slightly due to reduced demand as there have been no European-style OEM price increases to drive switch-selling. The USA cartridge export business to Europe has also substantially reduced due to the higher value dollar.

  • Colour laser printers continue to increase in market share in Europe. Many reconditioning companies struggle with the more complex technology and although up to 30% of mono cartridges are recycled, we believe only 10 – 12% of colour cartridges are recycled at this time, according to industry sources.

New Technology developed in PBTI laboratories has put us – and our customers – at the forefront of the ‘Alternative Cartridge Supplies’ market and although, as stated above, the global reconditioning industry struggles to recycle more than 10% or 12% of OEM cartridges, PBTI production in January ’09 was a massive 70% colour!

For our customers, having alternative colour cartridges at very competitive prices is a ‘profit margin inflator’ and the good news is we plan to launch a number of new colour products over the coming months.

Production

High demand for our products has meant some headaches as shelf-stock dipped temporarily, but we have increased production, late January, by over 20% and will continue to monitor requirements carefully as we raise shelf-stock to higher levels.

We really appreciate your patience as we have expanded to meet demand. The Alternative Supplies Market we are in is dynamic, growing and helping to sustain the world’s non-renewable resources. There is a powerful message to users of Xinia products:
  • Buy British

Thank you again for your loyalty – it is matched by our commitment to your trading success and, of course, ours.

Sincerely,
